CHAIRPERSON

Sue Cooper

Sue has been associated with Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth since its inception in 2008. She has been a member of the Board on many occasions over the years, in roles such as Chair (current), Secretary, Enrolments Officer and general Board member.

Sue has been associated with Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth since its inception in 2008. She has been a member of the Board on many occasions over the years, in roles such as Chair (current), Secretary, Enrolments Officer and general Board member. As a former teacher of Indonesian language, Sue ran student exchanges to Bali and Java over 20 years and the highlight of her teaching was seeing students become fascinated with Indonesia. Sue is passionate about making the learning of Indonesian language and culture available to Australians.

VICE CHAIRPERSON

Hara Kawulusan

Hara has been involved in Indonesian teaching in Perth for a long time. She was a valued and experienced teacher for BBIP for many years, and has been member of the BBIP Board since 2023.

She currently works as a teacher of Indonesian at a Perth private school. Hara brings energy, enthusiasm and ideas to our Board and is passionate about sharing her language and culture with Western Australians.

VICE CHAIRPERSON

Mas Wilfred

With over 10 years of experience in the classroom, Mas Wilfred solidified his passion for teaching Indonesian while volunteering with BBIP.

With over 10 years of experience in the classroom, Mas Wilfred solidified his passion for teaching Indonesian while volunteering with BBIP. Now, he is coming full circle by serving as our Enrollment Officer. For Mas Wilfred, this role is about giving back; helping to bring Indonesian language and culture to a broader audience. He is committed to making our courses accessible to everyone and building lasting cultural bridges through education.

Karen Bailey OAM

Ibu Karen taught Indonesian to students in Western Australian schools for 25 years. A former President of WILTA 1996 – 2006, she has been involved in many projects and programs which have enhanced the teaching and learning of Indonesian and created closer links with teachers and organisations in Australia and Indonesia during the last three decades.

A former President of WILTA 1996 – 2006, she has been involved in many projects and programs which have enhanced the teaching and learning of Indonesian and created closer links with teachers and organisations in Australia and Indonesia during the last three decades.

In June 2013 Ibu Karen was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for “service to education, particularly through the promotion of Indonesia Language and Culture In Australia”. Karen is a co-founder of BBIP and the inaugural chairperson from 2009 until her retirement in 2020. In 2025 Karen returned to the BBIP Board as Treasurer and is currently serving in that position.

Tri Sukardjo

Tri moved to Perth in 2022 and has since been a passionate advocate for sharing his Indonesian heritage with the local community. A proud Indonesian, he joined the BBIP Board last year to help promote the language and culture he loves.

A proud Indonesian, he joined the BBIP Board last year to help promote the language and culture he loves. In his role as Website Manager, Tri looks after BBIP’s “online home,” making sure it is easy for everyone to navigate and stay connected.

His long-term goal is to turn the website into a helpful resource center that truly supports our members in their language-learning journey, making Indonesian culture more accessible to everyone in Western Australia.

Danielle Horne

Danielle has been a teacher of Indonesian language in Perth since 1995 at both primary and secondary levels. She currently teaches at the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) a role which requires extensive use of educational technology.

Danielle has been a teacher of Indonesian language in Perth since 1995 at both primary and secondary levels. She currently teaches at the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) a role which requires extensive use of educational technology.

Danielle was Chairperson of Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth in 2023 and 2024. As a Board member, she coordinates the BBIP Language Assistant Program in collaboration with the Department of Education.

Danielle’s outstanding contribution to the Indonesian teaching profession was recognised when she received an Australia-Indonesia Institute Teaching Award in 2024.

Alice McDonald

Alice began studying Indonesian at Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth many years ago, driven by a desire to speak with locals while travelling in Bali.

Alice began studying Indonesian at Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth many years ago, driven by a desire to speak with locals while travelling in Bali. 

Now fluent in everyday Bahasa Indonesia, she regularly engages in language exchange and has travelled widely across the archipelago. 

Active in the Indonesian diaspora community, she has served as MC for Festival Indonesia, events hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Perth, and Indonesian student associations.

With a Bachelor of Science (Hons. Psychology), Alice brings strong community and stakeholder engagement to the BBIP board, where she is committed to broadening perceptions of Indonesia and strengthening collaboration across organisations, businesses, and communities engaged in the Australia–Indonesia relationship.

Zac Nichols-Lang

Zac has previously spent a year living and studying in Yogyakarta and has travelled Indonesia extensively, spanning Batam to Kupang.

Also involved in the Australia Indonesia Youth Association, Zac hopes to continue providing opportunities for Australian youth to meaningfully engage with Indonesia.

Indah Hixson

Ibu Indah has been teaching Indonesian for more than 20 years and recently joined BBIP.

Ibu Indah has been teaching Indonesian for more than 20 years and recently joined BBIP.

Before moving to Australia in 1995, she worked as a BIPA tutor at Universitas Negeri Malang and Universitas Merdeka Malang while completing her teaching degree in Malang, East Java. She later earned a Bachelor of Asian Studies and Education from Murdoch University and has continued to teach Indonesian in both public and private schools across the Perth area.

She is actively involved in the East Javanese community as Secretary of Arek Jatim WA and serves as a committee member of the Western Australian Indonesian Language Teachers Association (WILTA).

Simon Booth

Simon commenced Indonesia language studies as part of his Master of Development Studies degree at Murdoch University. In 2020, Simon completed an ACICIS in-country studies practicum working with Plastik Detox in Bali to reduce plastic waste.

Simon commenced Indonesia language studies as part of his Master of Development Studies degree at Murdoch University. In 2020, Simon completed an ACICIS in-country studies practicum working with Plastik Detox in Bali to reduce plastic waste.

Simon has lived two times in Bali for six-month periods, looking after his three young daughters whilst his wife was on posting. Simon has worked from 2012 to 2025 with the United Nations Migration Agency, regularly working with the Indonesian Consulate in Perth to assist  Indonesian nationals in distress to return home.

As a perpetual beginner, Simon is a regular participant in BBIP classes.
