If you attended our “Rasa Indonesia” event at Murdoch University you’ll know it was a lot of fun! Guests mingled on the pleasant green lawns surrounding the Javanese-style Pendopo while enjoying authentic Indonesian snacks beautifully served by Pak Rudi of Bintang Café.

There was plenty of chatting in Bahasa Indonesia, helped along by enthusiastic BBIP members and teachers, and four friendly students from the Murdoch University Indonesian Students’ Association (MUISA) – Lavica, Yunior, Margret and Leah.

We were also honoured with the presence of the Consul-General of Indonesia in Perth, Ibu Dewi Gustina Tobing. Ibu Dewi has given BBIP generous support throughout her tour of office in WA over the past few years, and the BBIP Board were delighted she could attend.

Apart from food and chatting, there’s nothing like music for getting people together, especially Indonesian traditional music! Gamelan and angklung are perfect examples of team work or gotong royong, with each person playing a separate instrument to produce a combined sound. Thanks to the excellent teaching of Pak Sofari Hidayat (gamelan) and the MUISA students (angklung) attendees produced some amazing sounds, from beautiful resonant and calming gamelan melodies to Que Sera Sera and Ode to Joy from the angklung group.

The BBIP Board would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended Rasa Indonesia. Judging from your happy faces plus positive comments and thank-yous at the conclusion of the evening, we can say it was a great success.

In particular we thank Pak Irianto, Indonesian Lecturer at Murdoch University, for all his support and assistance in helping this event to happen and the MUISA students for their cheerful and energetic presence.

If you attended, don’t forget to take your ticket receipt to Bintang Café at 11/910 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park for a 10% discount on a minimum $25 purchase.

Pak Sofari is available for school incursions and excursions (gamelan and wayang kulit) and can be contacted on 0451 471 973 or at sofaridayat@yahoo.com.
